John Alverdy, MD
Description
"The Rhoads Lecture is the highest and most prestigious of A.S.P.E.N.’s
annual awards. This honor recognizes Dr. Rhoads’ pivotal role in
the field of nutrition support therapy. The lecturer is recognized
internationally for major contributions to the field of specialized
nutrition support and has demonstrated a career-long commitment
to the improvement of the nutrition status of patients. Join A.S.P.E.N.
colleagues to honor the Distinguished 2010 Rhoads Lecturer, John C.
Alverdy, MD.
Dr. Alverdy is the Sarah and Harold Lincoln Thompson Professor
and Vice Chairman, Department of Surgery at the University of
Chicago. He is a nationally recognized surgeon with extensive experience
in traditional and laparoscopic weight loss surgery. Considered
a surgical innovator, Dr. Alverdy began performing gastric bypass
surgery and duodenal switch surgery using minimally invasive laparoscope
techniques prior to many other surgeons. With a research
interest in bacterial communication and how blocking this communication
may help prevent surgical patients from dying of infection,
Dr. Alverdy has been funded by the NIH for his work for most of
his career. Don’t miss the Rhoads Research Lecture and Awards Ceremony,
featuring Dr. Alverdy’s presentation. The A.S.P.E.N. Rhoads
Research Foundation grant recipients and other research award winners
will be honored during this plenary session."
