THE MULTIMODAL TREATMENT STRATEGY OF CACHEXIA
Track : Feburary 11, 2010
Program Code: H30
SPEAKER (S):
Vickie Baracos, PhD, Professor, Department of Oncology, University of Alberta; Alberta Cancer Foundation Chair in Palliative Medicine, Edmonton, Canada
Neil McDonald, MD, CM
Description
"Cachexia is a complex nutritional issue commonly occurring in
cancer, and is a marker for decreased survival. It is characterized by
anorexia, weight loss, fatigue, diminished quality of life and family
distress. The marked decline in lean body mass leads to a loss of
strength, endurance and independence. Also, individuals who experience
weight loss of >5% are less likely to complete chemotherapy
and more likely to experience treatment-related side effects than their
counterparts. This program will emphasize the biological factors that
contribute to cancer cachexia. Speakers will also identify treatment
strategies and describe opportunities for research in this area."
