PRE- AND PROBIOTICS: IMPLICATIONS FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE
Track : Feburary 11, 2010
Program Code: H32
SPEAKER (S):
Kelly Dowhower Karpa, PhD, RPh
Gail Cresci, PhD, RD, CNSD, LD, Staff Researcher, Gastroenterology/Hepatology Department, The Lerner Research Institute, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, OH
Description
"Sound scientific data has been accumulating that challenges the old
concept that nutrition support is concerned only with parenteral and
enteral feeding of energy and protein. The modern nutrition support
aim includes the attenuation of inflammation and modulation of the
immune system, particularly investigating reduction of infectious
complications and morbidity while improving survival. Medical
foods like pre- and probiotics have shown multiple beneficial effects
for a variety of patient populations. Presentations will feature a
review of the basic science available and present clinical results as
related to modern nutrition support aims."
