Description
Contraceptive procedures and techniques are constantly evolving. Clinicians who want to keep abreast of the latest
procedures must typically undergo separate training in each method from industry-sponsored sources. Such training can be expensive, commercially biased and an inefficient use of the clinician’s time. A combination of didactic lectures and hands-on experience allowing practitioners to learn several contraceptive methods in a non-commercial venue is a unique and valuable learning tool.

This course is designed to educate clinicians on recently approved contraceptive procedures and provide practical
training in their use. Recent literature on these new methods will be emphasized, along with a comparison to existing methods. Hands-on training for participants using inanimate models will follow the didactic sessions. The focus of this course is to train clinicians in the skills needed to provide the latest family planning methods that require special officebased procedures. Topics to be covered will include the modern intrauterine device, contraceptive implants, transcervical sterilization, and the manual vacuum aspiration technique of uterine evacuation. This course should be of interest to all healthcare practitioners who provide family planning services to their patients.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to:
1. Describe and insert the levonorgestrel intrauterine system and CuT380A intrauterine device, and counsel patients regarding anticipated bleeding patterns with these devices.
2. Compare the single rod etonogestrel contraceptive implant with the first-generation implant systems, counsel patients about the contraceptive benefits and bleeding patterns with this system, and demonstrate correct insertion technique.
3. List the advantages and disadvantages of the different methods of female surgical sterilization, and identify appropriate patients.
4. Demonstrate correct hysteroscopy technique and placement of the Essure® method of transcervical sterilization and discuss new technology.
5. List the advantages and disadvantages of outpatient dilation and curettage, office electric vacuum suction curettage and office manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) for pregnancy termination, and demonstrate correct uterine evacuation technique with the MVA.
