Dr. Levenback joined The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in 1989 following the completion of his fellowship training in Gynecologic Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. He is now a Professor and Deputy Chairman in the Department of Gynecologic Oncology and the Medical Director for the Gynecologic Oncology Center.
Dr. Levenback is a leader in clinical research regarding the application of sentinel lymph node biopsy in patients with gynecologic cancers. The goal of this surgical technique is to reduce the morbidity of radical surgery for vulvar and cervical cancer while preserving or improving survival. Dr. Levenback has led numerous clinical trials in this area and currently serves as principal investigator for two Gynecologic Oncology Group studies on the validity of sentinel lymph node biopsy. Hs has published many peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on this topic and is the senior editor of Clinical Lymphatic Mapping for Gynecologic Cancers. He has been invited to share his experience with medical audiences throughout the United States and Europe.
Dr. Levenback has co-authored 105 articles in peer-reviewed journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Obstetrics and Gynecology and The American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He has written 20 book chapters and co-edited three additional books on gynecologic cancer topics.
Dr. Levenback has earned a reputation as a champion for improved patient-physician communication. He has been a guest speaker at The M. D. Anderson Board of Visitors annual meetings, the Volunteer Recognition Luncheon, the Celebrate Solutions Luncheon and received the 2004 Outstanding Patient Educator Award. A busy clinician, Dr. Levenback sees patients with all types of gynecologic cancer and collaborates on numerous clinical trials. He performs laparoscopic surgical procedures in addition to the more traditional “open” abdominal/pelvic surgery.
Dr. Levenback is a husband and father of 2 college aged sons.
