Trained in Radiotherapy and Oncology at the Royal Marsden Hospital, London including a period of 2 years as clinical research fellow in Palliative Care and Oncology at the Royal Marsden and St Barthlomews Hospital, London. Appointed consultant to the Royal London Hospital in 1991 and subsequently to Mount Vernon Cancer Centre and University College London in 1992. Longstanding interests in palliative oncology with involvement as Principle Investigator in several large multicentre randomised trials, three of which are ongoing. Numerous publications in this area including chapters in the Oxford Texbook of Palliative Medicine and Melzack and Wall's Textbook of Pain together with my own textbook 'Oncology for Palliative Medicine' published by Oxford University Press. Other interests include brachytherapy, uro-oncology, gynae-oncology and lymphomas. I am currently Editor of Clinical Oncology, Assistant Editor for Brachytherapy and a member of the International Advisory Board for Lancet Oncology. I have lectured widely to international meetings including previous ASTRO, ESTRO and ECCO meetings. I am a teacher for the ESTRO Modern Brachytherapy course and Course Director for the ESTRO Prostate Brachytherapy course. I chair the Part 1 FRCR examination board for the Royal College of Radiologists in London and have acted as external examiner in Hong Kong and Sri Lanka.
James Hayman, Professor, University of Michigan Health Systems
Dr. James Hayman joined the faculty in Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Michigan immediately following his residency in 1996. He has achieved the rank of Professor and is also Associate Chair for Clinical Activities at the University Hospital. His clinical and research interests include the management of thoracic, breast and central nervous system malignancies. He is also one of the few US radiation oncologists who has been active in the field of health services research. He serves on numerous national committees and is helping to lead the American Society of Radiation Oncologys efforts to assess and improve quality of care in radiation oncology by serving as Co-Chair of its Quality Steering Committee.
I am one of only about a dozen Radiation Oncologists who also holds board certification in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. I have served as the ASTRO liaison to the palliative care community since 2003. I have published several palliative radiotherapy manuscripts. I serve as the chair of the American College of Radiology Appropriateness Criteria Bone Metastasis treatment group. I am the ASTRO representative to the 2010 International Consensus Conference Bone Metastasis working group. I have submitted a proposal to ASTRO to lead a group to produce the organization's first bone metastasis treatment guidelines. I am working with ASTRO and the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine to fashion an online palliative radiotherapy study guide for those who are planning to take the Hospice and Palliative Medicine board examination. I served on the examination committee of the American Board of Hospice and Medicine for several years. I have delivered several presentations at both the national and state hospice clinical meetings. I was one of the palliative radiotherapy presenters at the 2003 ASTRO meeting.
Laurel Herbst, VP Medical Affairs, San Diego Hospice & the Institute for Palliative Medicine; University of California San Diego
Dr. Herbst is vice president of medical affairs at San Diego Hospice & Palliative Care and a clinical professor of medicine at UCSD. She attended the University of Southern California for undergraduate training and medical school, completing her internship and internal medicine residency at LA County-USC Medical Center.
Dr. Herbst trained in Hematology-Oncology at the VA San Francisco and joined San Diego Hospice & Palliative Care as its first medical director in 1978. She is a founding member and past president of the American Academy of Palliative Medicine. She has twice received the YWCA Twin Award and was a 2004 nominee for the San Diego Business Journal's Women Who Mean Business Award. Dr. Herbst is the recipient of the first Robert T. Angarola award for excellence in pain management, the Sarnat Distinguished Humanitarian award, and the San Diego Combined Health Services Health Hero Award.
