Merrill S. Kies, MD, is Professor of Medicine in the Department of Thoracic/Head and Neck Medical Oncology at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. His past positions include Professor of Medicine and Clinical Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery of the Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago. He is the Deputy Division Head for Global Oncology Division of Cancer Medicine; M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.
Dr. Kies received his medical degree from Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago. His postgraduate training included an internship and residency in internal medicine at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC and a fellowship in hematology and oncology at Brooke Army Medical Center in Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Dr. Kies is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and holds subspecialty certification in medical oncology. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians.
Dr. Kiess research interests include combined modality treatment of head/neck cancer and nonsmall-cell lung cancer, new drug development, and rehabilitation in head and neck cancer. He has lectured nationally and internationally on topics related to head and neck cancers. Dr. Kies is a member of numerous professional organizations including the American Society of Clinical Oncology and The American Head and Neck Society.

Two-year Neuroradiology Fellowship; subspecialized training in head and neck radiology; I have been a practicing physician in these subspecialties for 14 years; I train medical students, residents, neuroradiology fellows, visiting international scholars, and physicians practicing radiology. I have an active head and neck and skull base biopsy service that I run. I have given and continue to give numerous invited lectures regionally, nationally, and internationally. I do research in head and neck cancer including functional PET and MR imaging involving the aerodigestive tract, sinonasal cavity, lymph glands, salivary glands, and thyroid gland. I have published over 100 articles in excellent peer-reviewed journals in these areas of clinical and scientific research. I hold numerous leadership positions in National societies including the current President of the American Society of Head and neck Radiology, Executive committee member and ASHNR representative at the American Society of Neuroradiology, Chair of the educational exhibits in Neuroradiology for the Radiological Society of North America, RadioGraphics Editorial Board for the RSNA, and member of the study section for the RSNA Research and Education Foundation to name a few.
