Description
The radiotherapeutic adjuvant management of pancreatic cancer has evolved from the bony landmarks designated in RTOG 9704 to the current CT based physician delineated volumes. As Abrams et al noted in the publication cited above, failure to adhere to protocol specified radiation therapy guidelines is associated with decreased survival as evidenced by the 9704 analysis. Since the field borders in that trial were delineated by bony landmarks and there was still such protocol variation, it is more important than ever that in the IMRT and 3D era our physicians get additional hands on training in contouring the relevant postoperative anatomy. It can be very confusing to delineate structures post Whipple surgery so we think this course is essential to ensure that target volumes are properly delineated since the literature shows that this influences survival. At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be able to do the following: 1. Strengthen hands-on contouring skills. 2. Practice contouring techniques with leading experts. 3. Compare contours with leading experts. 4. Explain key IMRT review plan principles.
