Chemical Modifications of Biologics to Improve Performance
Track : Drug Discovery and Development
Program Code: 589
Date: Tuesday, June 17, 2008
Time: 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM  EST
Location: 30A
CHAIR (S):
Jeffrey Cleland, BaroFold, Inc
Bruce Kimmel, PhD, VP, Therapeutic Applications, Ambrx, Inc
SPEAKER (S):
Shawn DeFrees, PhD, VP, Technology Development , Neose Technologies, Inc
Frank Feller, Fresenius Kabi Deutschland Gmbh
Description
"Chemical modifications of biologics include covalent attachment of inert polymers such as polyethylene glycol
(PEG) and carbohydrates. PEGylation technology has led to the successful commercialization of several products. New PEGylation technologies provide superior methods to achieve
increased specific activity with reduced immunogenicity for proteins and antibody fragments. Novel carbohydrate technologies have evolved to eliminate microheterogeneity and provide products with potentially greater efficacy and safety."

Objective1: Provide an overview of emerging technologies to create novel biologics.

Objective2: Demonstrate the need for improvements in safety, efficacy and compliance of existing products.

Objective3: Illustrate the near-term value of chemical modification strategies for biologics.
