Track : Exciting Science 2009
Program Code: 2924
Date: Tuesday, May 19, 2009
Time: 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM  EST
Location: B304

Description
In 2007, scientists published research indicating that they had been able to induce mouse skin cells to be "reprogrammed" to an embryonic state. Science has continued to build upon iPS cells, broadening their applicability and learning more about how they might fit into personalized medicine. In addition, such cells are enabling ever more advanced screening technologies for drugs. This panel will build upon the discussion started at BIO 2008 and highlight the latest advances in iPS cells and discuss where science has progressed. Are we closer to developing therapies based on iPS cells? What needs to be done to obtain therapeutically relevant cells? Join in a discussion of the science behind the headlines, the future applications as well as the business and policy implications behind this potentially paradigm-shifting advancement.

• Analyze recent research advances demonstrating the reprogramming of somatic cells to an embryonic state
• Present the commercial applications of such research both from a tools and therapeutics perspective
• Discuss the policy implications of such research
