Size Does Matter: The Increasing Importance of Nanotechnology to the Biotech Industry
Track : Exciting Science 2009
Program Code: 3061
Date: Tuesday, May 19, 2009
Time: 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM  EST
Location: B304
SPEAKER (S):
Tony Cass, PhD, Imperial College London
Mike Fisher, PhD, Bio Nano Centre Ltd
Moira Gunn, PhD, Biotech Nation
Thomas Keller, PhD, GlaxoSmithKline R&D , Medicines Research Centre
William Moffitt, President & CEO, Nanosphere, Inc
Description
Panelists will address the increasing promise that nanotechnology holds for the biotech industry and how it can be applied to discovery and characterisation through greater understanding of molecular interactions, and development of biotech products through nanoformulations to improve bioavailability and reduced side effects. Specific examples where nanotechnology has been applied to biotech product discovery and development will be demonstrated along with predictions of where the future opportunities lie for the technology. Tackle regulation, toxicology and public perception of nanotech and how industry, governments and regulators handle this new discipline.

• Discuss the opportunities nanotech provides to bio research and where in reality it can be applied
• Discuss case studies where nanotech has enhanced biotech products and ensured successful development
• Address ethical and regulatory hurdles faced by bionanotech products
