Karen Cooper joined Carters at its Ottawa office while on leave from her position as Senior Rulings Officer with the Income Tax Rulings Directorate of Canada Revenue Agency. Ms. Cooper’s practice focuses on charity and not-for-profit law with an emphasis on tax. Ms. Cooper is also an adjunct professor at the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Common Law.

For five years, Carla has developed and managed the province-wide planned giving program of The Land Conservancy of British Columbia (TLC) in Victoria, BC. Prior to TLC she spent ten years in international development in Africa and five years in Switzerland with a charitable foundation. Carla has a MSc. from the University of Manitoba.

The Green Legacies Project provides gift planning capacity building tools for environmental NGO’s. Nora Layard has coordinated the project over the past seven years and in her spare time she manages her retreat B&B on Salt Spring Island.

Description
When charities are offered gifts of land, non-monetary land values must be considered. The presenters will discuss ways to get a reading on the full spectrum of land values and provide ideas and resources for honouring both donors' wishes and the community and environmental contexts. Legal and tax updates will also be provided.
