Bernie McCann, MS, CEAP is a Research Associate at the Brandeis/Harvard Center for Managed Care and Drug Abuse and doctoral candidate at Brandeis University. He is the author of Improving EAP Outcomes: Incorporating Advances in Substance Abuse Research and co-author of Revisiting EAPs and Workplace Substance Abuse: Key Issues and a Research Agenda.

Elizabeth L. Merrick, Ph.D., M.S.W. is Senior Scientist in the Institute for Behavioral Health, Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University. Dr. Merrick is a behavioral health services researcher whose work includes a focus on workplace behavioral health, especially the utilization and role of employee assistance programs.

Deidre Hiatt Ph.D. is Vice President, Quality Improvement for MHN. She has conducted studies effectiveness of EAP referrals, characteristics of highly effective therapists in provider networks, and psychological assessment of law enforcement applicants.

This research-based presentation will review findings from a diverse set of analyses based on claims data as well as survey findings regarding access and utilization of behavioral health services in stand-alone EAP or managed behavioral healthcare (MBHC) products and integrated (EAP/MBHC) products. The study findings have implications for EA providers, human resource administrators, employers, and other stakeholders involved in purchasing, administrating, providing and evaluating EA programs. The presenters will describe the implications of the findings for service delivery as well as the benefits and challenges of an academic-provider partnership.
