Martin I. Surks, M.D., M.A.C.P. is Program Director, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at Montefiore Medical Center and The Albert Einstein College of Medicine, a position he has held since 1976. A Columbia University graduate, he received his medical degree from New York University-Bellevue College of Medicine. Following residency in internal medicine at Montefiore Medical Center and the Bronx VA Medical Center, Dr. Surks embarked on a career of endocrine research at Montefiore Medical Center and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, N. Y. Aside from several years in the US Army Medical Corps, Dr. Surks has spent his entire career at Montefiore Medical Center and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where he holds appointments as Professor of Medicine and Pathology. He carried out basic and clinical research in thyroid disease, funded by US Army and NIH grants for nearly 30 years, and provides extensive teaching and consultative patient care. He has published 209 peer-reviewed papers, book chapters and reviews as well as 2 books. He served full terms on the VA and NIH Endocrinology Study Sections, and on the Editorial Boards of Endocrinology, the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism and the American Journal of Physiology. He was Associate Editor of Endocrinology for 3 years. He is currently on the Editorial Board of THYROID. He was elected to the American Board of Internal Medicine subspecialty committee on Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism in 1986 and served as its Chairman and a member of the Board of Directors of ABIM between 1991 � 1995. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation, the Association of American Physicians and the Interurban Clinical Club. In 1993, Dr. Surks was honored by election to Secretary (COO) of the American Thyroid Association and subsequently served as President and Past-President. He was a founding member of the Association of Program Directors of Endocrinology and Metabolism, and served the organization in many capacities including President. He led a collaborative project that resulted in development of a generic �gold standard� curriculum for Endocrinology training programs that is widely used by Program Directors. He completed an eight-year term on the Finance Committee of the Endocrine Society and was Chairman for the last 4 years. He served as a founder and now as Chairman-Emeritus of the Endocrine Self Assessment Program of the Endocrine Society. He was elected to the Council of The Endocrine Society. He has published >200 peer reviewed papers, and 2 books. Dr. Surks was honored in 2002 by being awarded Mastership of the American College of Physicians and the Distinguished Service Award of the American Thyroid Association.
