Description
The presentation will highlight the need for your facility to have an implementation plan in place for the transition to the new electronic transfer version X12 5010 and the transition to ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS. It may seem early, but the impact of these new standards will impact virtually every billing system, electronic interface as well as many manual processes and knowledge bases. Year 2000 was significant, yet it was essentially a computer-specific transition.

Your implementation plan should represent the breadth of the impact across personnel and system processes. Training requirements, productivity impact on staffing needs, documentation requirements and existing manual processes such as encounter forms need to be considered alongside the storage and communication of these new ICD-10 codes. Related topics such as general equivalency mappings, outsourcing and parallel testing will be incorporated within the discussion. Given the aggressive timeframe for this transition, and the breadth of process interdependencies within a hospital, contingency planning will be a consistent theme throughout the discussion.

Presentation will offer project planning suggestions for this initiative, focusing on the importance of carefully sequence any upgrades while coordinating with external interfaces/vendors who will have their own ICD-10 project plan.

Learning Objectives:
  • Apply lessons from year 2000 upgrade
  • Assess the effect of the transition on systems and business processes
  • Identify the resources available within your hospital to build a 5010/ICD-10 transition team, including an ICD-10 transition project manager
  • List hospital-specific requirements and timeframe for X12 5010 and ICD-10
