Description
Chronic pain is a common problem in the general population, which can be challenging to deal with from the perspective of both patients and healthcare practitioners. Unrelenting chronic pain has economic and social consequences and is emerging as a serious health problem in North America.. The recent development of integrative approaches, using conventional medical therapies and complementary and alternative medical (CAM) strategies side by side, is an attractive option for managing and treating chronic pain and can be used to the advantage of patients following various models of care.
This workshop will focus primarily on the role and efficacy of acupuncture in the treatment and management of pain of various types, including myofascial and neuropathic pain. In addition, the influence of vitamin D deficiency on musculoskeletal pain and functioning will be explored. Vitamin D deficiency is now seen to be widespread in Canada, and strategies for correcting this common deficiency will be outlined. Other nutritional interventions, including the use of magnesium, and vitamins B and C, will also be discussed. Evidence will be provided for the effectiveness of these approaches and/or the rationale for their use. Practical advice on the use of supplements for pain will be included.
