Description
While on the surface there may seem to be few comparisons between an author who is generally acknowledged as the greatest Irish poet of the last century and a series of children's books that have attained record-breaking sales and achieved a near cult-like following, there are certain patterns of development and theme which make the investigation and comparison of the works of these two authors fruitful. This paper compares the methods of creating a new national mythology and the subsequent turn to darker, more political themes that are seen in the works of both authors, as well as a discussion of how this pattern of literary evolution might be uniquely tied in to the subjects that the authors wrote about.
