Description
A family of Harry Potter fans, through cross-disciplinary and fiction vs. non-fiction approaches, shares how they use different lenses to read and view J. K. Rowling's works. They will discuss how Rowling's world parallels and defies real space and time. Specifically, what do Hogwarts and Google have in common? A graphic designer discusses the color theory behind Harry Potter; through film and modern imagery, she will explore the house colors and their significance. Are invisibility cloaks possible? Talk with a physicist about the exciting field of nanotechnology and discover the "magic" that might be reality! A horticulturalist, examining various herbs, plants, and trees in HP texts, will explore how and why Rowling drew from natural elements to give her characters supernatural abilities. And an English professor will demonstrate how the culture of school in HP films addresses loaded issues in school culture including classroom management, standards, dating, violence, and bullying.
