Description
There's No Such Thing As Canon (50 minutes) - M Groesbeck - Few would dispute the importance of J.K. Rowling's formative contribution to Harry Potter fandom -- including inventing the templates for the characters we love -- but how much authority should her ideas hold? How do fans with different ideas about the possibilities of the Harry Potter books' characters and settings situate ourselves with respect to Rowling's novels? Should we -- must we -- liberate fans from ideas of "canon"? A re-examination of the ideas of "canon" and "non-canon"- along with derivative categories such as "fanon" -- suggests a fan-empowering alternative to concerns about adherence to or deviation from a proposed "canon".
