Carol Cwiak is a member of the Emergency Management Faculty at North Dakota State University. Ms. Cwiak's work over the past five years has focused primarily on preparedness and mitigation strategies, professionalization, chaos theory, public-private partnerships and bridging the gap between academics and practitioners. Ms. Cwiak is a member of the North Dakota Emergency Services Advisory Committee, a board member and past president of North Dakota InfraGard, a member of the IAEM Scholarship Committee and the Project Coordinator of NDSU's Disaster Resistant University Project. She has worked on numerous projects for local, state and federal government agencies that focus on innovation and community sustainability. She is also a member of the team currently working on the Core Principles and Doctrine of Emergency Management under the auspices of FEMA's Emergency Management Institute. Ms. Cwiak is poised to receive the first Ph.D. in Emergency Management in the nation from NDSU.

Description
After many years of trying to negotiate an identity, Emergency Management is poised as a profession to evolve into a managerial framework that is integrated both vertically and horizontally. This session presents a roadmap for the profession's evolution to a position of vision and stewardship regarding sustainable communities.
