Description
The Practical Engagement Program (PEP) is an integral part of the School of Information's professional master's program. A structured and required credit-based internship program, PEP provides students with a monitored, mentored, and reflective internship experience that is supported by a Career Services team and their professional development activities. PEP integrates the application of technical knowledge and hard skills to specific challenges encountered in real world environments. Through online portfolios, blogs, and mentorship, students are able to reflect in the short and long-term on these experiences and gain a comprehensive learning experience that will aid them in making more educated career decisions. PEP not only supports a holistic approach to career development, but also creates a developmental connection to a strong academic foundation that allows for students to receive academic credit by participating in the program. PEP is unique in that it is a comprehensive, holistic experiential learning experience that integrates Web 2.0 technologies to offer students a comprehensive reflective experience through the use of ePortfolios. When the Graduate Career Services at the University of Michigan School of Information surveyed 175 of their 2006 graduates on what they felt proved to be the most valuable experience during graduate school, 84% of the respondents indicated that participation in the Practical Engagement Program (PEP) was identified as one of their most important/valuable graduate school experiences. This comprehensive experiential learning program has proven to be critical to a successful career development process for students i.e. making the right career choices and readiness for the job market. Ninety five percent of the respondents reported being satisfied or extremely satisfied with their level of job/career satisfaction after graduation.
