Description
Catholic elementary schools underserve Latino students, especially those who are bilingual. This presentation suggests that these schools must build the capacity of the educators to effectively serve bilingual/bicultural students. This presentation focuses on conceptualizing linguistic diversity as an asset; building the skills of educators to understand language acquisition and how to accommodate students with limited English proficiency; and building the skills of educators to create culturally-responsive school communities. The importance of strong board support and partnerships with public schools, universities, non profit organizations, and businesses, will also be emphasized.
