Description
The Federal Government through the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is driving U.S. health entities to upgrade from ICD-9 diagnosis and procedure codes to ICD-10/HIPAA 5010 by October 2013. U.S. adoption of ICD-10 will require a massive overhaul of the nation’s medical coding system, because the current ICD-9 codes are deeply imbedded as part of the coding, reporting and reimbursement performed today. It will require a massive wave of system reviews, extensive updates to existing policies and procedures and changes to many interfaces. Speakers in this session will review some of the technical and nontechnical implications to health plans and providers moving to ICD-10. You will leave the session with a greater understanding of:

• the differences between ICD-10 and ICD-9 diagnosis codes,
• the impact of the differences between these codes on the data and systems requirements for administering claims,
• the impact of the new codes on actuarial analysis for reserving and pricing medical products and
• the financial impact of the systems changes on health plan administrative expenses.
