Description
Public health represents an untapped opportunity for actuaries and the U.S. healthcare system to reduce
cost and improve population health. This session will provide a broad overview of public health in the
United States. Discussion topics will include:
• What is public health and how does it differ from healthcare?
• History of public health over the last two centuries
• The contribution of the public health system to improving health
• Prevention as an opportunity for system-wide savings
You'll have a greater appreciation for the importance of public health and the role actuaries can play in
improving population health in their community. You are encouraged to attend the paired session on the
health policy process to gain more perspective on this topic.
