Description
Virtually all healthcare systems are funded using a mix of public financing, private health insurance and
private out-of-pocket payments. Some systems emphasize public funding, while others rely much more
on private financing. There is also a great deal of variation in which medical care services are funded
using public resources and which services are funded using private resources. This session explores the
interaction of public and private financing and the underlying factors that affect the shape of a nation's
healthcare system. Particular attention will be paid to perpetual stresses that must somehow be
managed and how the shape of each nation's healthcare system reflects its social norms and political
process.
