Bookstore Kiosk for Textbooks and Class Schedules (4379)
Track: Student Services
Program Code: 4379
LEAD PRESENTER / PANEL ORGANIZER / BOF LEADER :
Don Erlitz, Director of Information Services, Northwest University
Description
To help the flow of bookstore traffic, allow students quickly find their books, and provide convenient way to buy parking passes without overburdening bookstore checkers with paperwork, we built a kiosk. We implemented the kiosk using a standup computer rack on wheels, a compact form factor computer, a touch screen monitor, keyboard, and receipt printer. On this we have running a web browser placed into a "kiosk" mode (meaning no browser UI except the web page itself) and we developed a series of web pages specially formatted for touch screens (larger buttons, input fields, and a way to navigate back to a landing page). Now when students go to buy books at the beginning of a semester they can walk up to the kiosk right outside the bookstore, login using their school account information, and do two things: get a course list for the upcoming term printed on a receipt; request up to two vehicle parking passes (which they pay for at the bookstore). This system gives us the ability to provide students access to important information in a strategic location. Also implementing this system using a web browser allows us to easily and quickly add features and update information.
