Description
Modernizing Banner is one of the most challenging and exciting projects we've undertaken. Banner includes decades worth of proven programming styles and practices reaching back to a pre-Windows version. Moving it into a modern technology requires us to visit every line of code in the system. Automated techniques taken from ADM (Architecture Driven Modernization) are being used at each step of the way. These techniques accelerate development process, ensure a high level of consistency throughout the newly created code, and allow developers to concentrate on modernizing the critical business logic instead of spending time building infrastructure and "plumbing" code. Tools & techniques are being developed by SGHE which can be replicated by the IT departments in schools to modernize Banner customizations with the same accuracy and effectiveness as SGHE development teams. Further, the use of these techniques embraces iterative application modernization and horizontal change propagation. This will ease the effort in implementing system wide changes whenever there is a change/improvement in systems architecture or technology. We'll describe the tools and techniques we are using and illustrate how they are being used in the modernization process. This will also answer some of the questions regarding modernizing customizations customers have been asking.
