Athanassios Argiris, M.D., FACP, Professor, University of Pittsburgh

Athanassios Argiris, MD, FACP, is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and Medical Director of the Aerodigestive Cancers Program. He is also the Clinical Associate Director of the Lung SPORE and Associate Chief for Multidisciplinary Clinics in the Division of Hematology-Oncology. Dr. Argiris research is focusing on the development of novel therapeutics in early stage and advanced head and neck and thoracic malignancies. His research interests include the use of angiogenesis inhibitors, EGFR inhibitors, Src inhibitors, proteasome inhibitors, histone deacetylase inhibitors, and other agents. Dr. Argiris earned his medical degree at the Medical School of Athens, Greece in 1990. Dr. Argiris completed his Medical Oncology training at Yale University where he participated in the development of novel chemotherapy regimens. In 2000, he received a Young Investigator Scholar Award for Clinical/Translational Research by the American Association for Cancer Research. From 2000-2005, Dr. Argiris was an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Feinberg School of Medicine of Northwestern University in Chicago, IL, where he led the clinical research efforts in aerodigestive malignancies at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Argiris is a member of the Eastern Cooperative Oncology group (ECOG) Head and Neck and Thoracic Core Committees, and he is the principal investigator for multiple ECOG trials. He is the recipient of an ECOG Research and Education Young Investigator Award. He also serves as a member of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Head and Neck Steering Committee and the Previously-Untreated Locally Advanced Task Force of the NCI Head and Neck Steering Committee. Dr. Argiris has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Clinical Oncology, the International Journal of Cancer Research, and the Open Lung Cancer Journal, and he has been elected Fellow of the American College of Physicians.
