Description
Longevity and quality of life for cardiology patients and oncology patients receiving radiation therapy has improved due to the benefit of our sophisticated world of advanced technology. Oncology patients who have implanted cardiac devices such as a pacemaker or a cardioverter defibrillator present concerns because of the potential effect that ionizing radiation can have on the function and reliability of the devices. This session will review the cardiac risks that require an implanted device, a presentation on the cardiac devices and benefits the device provides to improve heart health of the patient, and knowledge on how radiation oncology nurses can maintain a safe environment for patients by implementing policies and protocols within their department. A collaborative relationship and shared knowledge between nurses in cardiology and oncology will provide to the patient an expertise which will optimize the nursing management of their heart disease and oncology treatment. At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be able to do the following: 1. Describe cardiac pathology related to oncology therapy, lifestyle, or medical reasons which necessitated the patient's need for an implantable cardiac device. 2. Explain the differences between pacemakers and more sophisticated implantable devices. 3. Recognize the potential effects of ionizing radiation on cardiac devices and explain how cardiac patients and their devices should be monitored and protected.
