Description
Many patients who undergo radiation therapy (RT) treatment develop radiation-induced skin toxicity. For some patients, this reaction is more pronounced than in others because of combined therapies or pre-existing skin issues. Many RT nurses are aware that the severity of the reaction can be attributed to treatment-related factors, such as beam energy, dose per fraction, treatment duration, use of bolus, treatment site, as well as patient specific factors. However, RT nurses should be aware of all the issues that can effect skin, such as RT long effects, systemic skin reactions and infectious skin problems as we treat the whole person. This presentation will review some of the major acute/late effects of RT to the skin, bring skin reactions cause by systemic agents, and present some of the common infectious skin issues that RT patients face in their every day treatment. At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be able to do the following: 1. Discuss pivotal studies related to management of EGFR. 2. Recognize stage of acute/late skin reactions of RT and make recommendations for treatment. 3. Identify various infectious disease skin disorders that could impact the oncology patient.
