Description
Oropharynx cancer is a common head and neck malignancy which also has an evolving epidemiologic profile due to the increasing prevalence of HPV related disease. This course will describe the presentation, evaluation and management of patients with these cancers. The multidisciplinary approach will be discussed with the emphasis on radiation based treatment. Radiation techniques such as IMRT and IGRT will be discussed, as will the details of contouring and implementing treatment. The last portion of the presentation (~1/3 of total) will discuss details of radiation treatment implementation and how these are integrated with normal tissue constraint. The emphasis throughout will be on radiation technique. After this session, the audiences will be comfortable when they encounter these patients in the clinic. They should be able to develop treatment plan for the patients, and develop sophisticated radiation treatment plans for each individual patient. At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be able to do the following: 1.Discuss the overall management of oropharynx cancers. 2. List the issues and details involved in implementing radiation based treatment, focusing on the use of IMRT and IGRT. 3. Explain normal structure dose constraints, side effects and possible complications of radiation based therapy of oropharynx cancer.
