Hypofractionation in the Management of CNS Tumors
Track : Educational Session
Program Code: EDU315
Date: Tuesday, October 30, 2012
Time: 4:45 PM to 6:15 PM  EST
Duration: 90 Minutes
Location: 153 ABC
SPEAKER(S):
Eric Lin Chang, MD
Michael Milano, MD, PhD
Timothy Solberg, PhD
Description
The presenters in this session will discuss the role of hypofractionation and stereotactic radiosurgery in the management of patients with primary and secondary brain tumors. Primarily emphasized will be the emergence of hypofractionated treatment regimens and the development of appropriate treatment strategies based on patient- and disease-specific factors. The application of rigorous quality assurance in planning and delivery will be reviewed. The use of appropriate prescription doses for single- or hypofractionated regimens, with respect to efficacy and toxicity risks, will be outlined as well. At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be able to do the following: 1. Review linear accelerator and Gamma knife based radiosurgery quality assurance and delivery techniques. 2. Describe the role of hypofractionation in the management of patients with primary and metastatic brain tumors. 3. Describe the rationale and radiobiologic foundation for hypofractionation as a delivery strategy and apply knowledge of hypofractionated dose tolerances of critical structures and therapeutic doses to the formulation of a treatment strategy for benign and malignant brain tumors.
