Description
Greater emphasis is being placed on comparative effectiveness research to determine the "optimal" treatment for cancer patients. In many cases multiple treatments ultimately result in equivalent overall survival outcomes however the morbidity and impact on patient's quality of life can vary significantly. Health related quality of life measures are an important assessment of patient oriented outcomes that can influence clinical decision making. NCI recently has set goals of standardizing the key patient reported outcome and quality of life domains most relevant for individual disease sites. This session will provide an overview of the exisiting health related quality of life outcomes tools, the evidence supporting their validation, and how they can be used on a daily basis in the clinic to improve patient satisfaction and comfort with their treatment decisions. At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be able to do the following: 1. Identify the reasons for including HRQOL measurements in treatment studies and daily clinical practice. 2. Evaluate existing HRQOL tools that can be readily used by clinicians on a day to day basis. 3. Describe the clinical significance of HRQOL data.
