Description
Head and neck cancer of unknown primary, sinonasal cancer and salivary gland cancer are not common. Many practicing radiation oncologists lack of experience in dealing with these cancers. There have not been formal didactic courses on these cancers in previous ASTRO meetings. The anatomy is complex with many dose limiting critical structures. Treatment approaches and treatment planning are complex. In this session, general reviews of these cancers are given. The role of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation treatment will be reviewed. Personalized treatment approach will be discussed, especially regarding the sequence and combination of different modalities, based on patient and tumor characteristics. Detailed discussion of advanced radiation techniques including IMRT and IGRT will be given. After this session, the audiences will be comfortable when they encounter these patients in the clinic. They should be able to develop general treatment plan for the patients, and able to develop sophisticated radiation treatment plans for each individual patient. At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be able to do the following: 1. Outline the general knowledge of these cancers. 2. Explain the general management, especially the multidisciplinary approaches in management of these cancers. 3. Explain how to use IMRT/IGRT to treat these cancers including simulation, target delineation, treatment planning, and normal structure dose constrains, treatment outcomes, side effects and complications.
