Christopher Crane, Associate Professor, Chief, GI Section,
M.D. Anderson Cancer Center
Dr. Christopher Crane is an Associate Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center where he has been Program Director of Gastrointestinal Radiation Oncology at since 2001. He also serves as the Program Director of the Residency and Fellowship Training Programs. He has been invited to speak widely on gastrointestinal topics both nationally and internatinally and authored or coauthored over 75 manuscripts as well as 35 text book chapters and 30 invited publications focusing on gastrointestinal malignancies. His primary research focus has been the combination of novel chemotherapeutic agents with radiation therapy in pancreatic and rectal cancers in prospective phase I and phase II trials as well as teaching the multidisciplinary management and supportive care of patients with gastrointestinal malignancies.

Dr. Julio Garcia-Aguilar, a surgeon specializing in colon and rectal surgery, is surgeon-in-chief of the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. In addition to colon and rectal surgery, his areas of expertise include the treatment of patients with inflammatory bowel disease and pelvic floor disorders. Garcia-Aguilar, a native of Spain, earned undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Madrid. After completing a residency in Spain, he completed a general surgery residency at Harvard's Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, where he spent two years conducting basic research at Harvard Medical School's Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
He completed an advanced fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at the University of Minnesota and was appointed an associate professor of surgery at San Carlos University Hospital in Madrid. He joined the surgery faculty of the University of Minnesota in 1996 and then joined UCSF Medical Center in 2002 as chief of the colon and rectal surgery section and a professor of surgery.

Assess the potential benefit of IMRT and novel concurrent chemotherapeutic agents in the management of colorectal cancer patients.

Evaluate the risk assessment of patients with resected rectal cancer based on TN stage as well as the quality of the surgery.

Explain the potential risks and benefits of the use of local excision following chemoradiation in rectal cancer patients.
