Simon Powell,
M.D., Ph.D.,
Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center
Dr. Powell is a cancer physician-scientist. He is well known in cancer research, particularly for the molecular mechanisms of DNA double-strand break repair, which are needed to repair the DNA damage caused by ionizing radiation. His specific major research interest is the repair pathway of homologous recombination, which he has shown is often dysregulated in human tumor cells. Homologous recombination involves many nuclear proteins, including the breast cancer genes, BRCA1 and BRCA2, whose function is inactivated in familial breast or ovarian cancers. Recent work has suggested that this pathway may be affected in sporadic cancers as well. As a physician, he has focused on the clinical treatment of breast cancer, introducing new radiation techniques for the treatment of early-stage and node-positive breast cancer. He has also developed new clinical protocols for assessing the response of pre-operative therapy based on the DNA repair status of the tumor. Dr. Powell is currently a principal investigator on numerous research grants, including individual research grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He serves on the editorial board of the journal Cancer Biology and Therapy and is a past associate editor of the International Journal of Cancer and Radiation Research. He was a member of the Radiation Therapy and Biology study section at the NIH. He has received numerous invitations to speak at national and international meetings.
