Professor Peter Goldstraw is a graduate of the University of Birmingham and a Fellow of the Royal Colleges of Edinburgh and England. After training in Scotland and South Africa he was appointed Consultant Thoracic Surgeon to the Royal Brompton Hospital in 1979. He has held consultant posts at University College Hospital, the Whittington Hospital, the Middlesex Hospital, Benenden Hospital and with the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force. He is Professor of Thoracic Surgery at Imperial College, University of London and has been visiting Professor in Cape Town, Toronto, Boston, St Louis, the Mayo Clinic, University of Virginia, MD Anderson and Singapore. He has given over 340 International, and 75 National, lectures including the FG Pearson, OT Claggett, Michael Boyd, Tudor Edwards, EP Richards and Robert Henderson Lectures. He was awarded the Price Thomas Gold Medal from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2004, a Lifetime Achievement Award by the British Thoracic Oncology Group in 2006, Honorary membership of the ESTS in 2007 and the Merit Award by the IASLC in 2007. He has published over 230 articles in peer-reviewed journals and over 50 chapters in specialist textbooks. He has been on the editorial board of the Annals of Thoracic Surgery, Thorax, the Journal of Cardiovascular Surgery, European Journal of Surgical Oncology and Lung Cancer. He has reviewed for many International journals including Lancet, BMJ, JTCVS, JCO and JTO. He is presently committed to edit the lung cancer sections of the UICC 7th Edition of TNM Classification of Malignant Tumours, and the TNM Supplement: A Commentary on Uniform Use. He is to be the editor of an IASLC/UICC/AJCC Manual on the Staging of Lung Cancer. He has held office in several societies including the Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, the British Thoracic Society, the European Respiratory Society, the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and the Royal Society of Medicine. He has been the Chairman of the UK Cardiothoracic Training Committee, a member of the European Board of Thoracic Surgery and UK representative to the European Union of Medical Specialists section of Cardiothoracic Surgery. He is the chair of the IASLC Staging Project which advises the UICC and AJCC on revisions of the TNM Classification of Lung Cancer, the chair of the UICC TNM Expert Advisory Panel on Lung Cancer and the section editor on Lung Cancer for the UICC 7th Edition of TNM.
