Description
Intensity modulated radiotherapy has become standard of care for the majority of head and neck cancers treated with definitive or adjuvant radiation. Although contouring atlases and consensus guidelines have been established, the art of contouring continues to evolve as new data are published about important avoidance structures and treatment outcomes. The objective of this session is to review current guidelines as well as understand new approaches to head and neck contouring to optimize organ function preservation and cancer control. At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be able to do the following: 1. Identify basic anatomy in the cases presented and understand normal tissue dose constraints and target dose objectives. 2. Identify the rationale for current contouring approaches for common clinical scenarios. 3. Define the GTV, CTV and PTV for nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal carcinoma. 4. Compare contours of leading experts and their nuances.
