Description
This session will provide an overview of the management of early stage breast cancer, from a radiation oncology perspective. The literature supporting breast conserving therapy with or without radiation, and current controversies, including selection factors, integration with systemic therapy, risk factors for local-regional relapse, histologic subtypes, ommission of radiation and partial breast irradiation, in the management of early stage breast cancer will be reviewed and discussed. Technical issues as they relate to management of early stage disease, including IMRT, alternative fractionation, partial breast irradiation and prone breast irradiation will be presented and discussed. At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be able to do the following: 1. Discuss the data supporting breast conservation in the management of early stage breast cancer and the selection of patients for breast conserving therapy with or without radiation. 2. Review the technical issues of radiation delivery including IMRT, partial breast irradiation, alternate fractionation and prone breast irradiation. 3. Explain the current role and future directions for partial breast irradiation and alternative treatment strategies.
