Description
This session will provide a brief overview of what cancer survivorship is from both a providers and a patient's perspective. During the session the speaker will discuss the lack of national guidelines and the reason. The session will discuss the lack of evidence based survivorship practice and how this is an opportunity for nursing to lead the nation in the development of EBP in survivorship. The concept "Standard's of post treatment care" (SOPTC) will be using current standards of care model as the reference point. During the session the speaker will discuss his systematic process to develop SOPTC. The session will discuss the relationship between post treatment risks and a patient's diagnosis, treatment and co morbid conditions. In the session, the prevention paradigm will be explained in relationship to risks related to therapy- Primary prevention/health promotion strategies intend to avoid the development of late effects and secondary prevention strategies attempt to diagnose early and treat late effects before it results in significant morbidity. The session will also discuss how the development of SOPTC is directly linked to the creation of patient centered treatment summaries and care plans. This session will walk through the development of SOPTC and explain how this can be applied directly to everyone's current clinical practice. At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be able to do the following: 1. Describe the concept "Standards of post treatment care" in relationship to therapeutic induced risks. 2. Discuss the opportunity survivorship presents for nurses to establish evidence based practice. 3. Develop "Standards of post treatment care" and patient centered treatment summaries and care plans.
