Changes to the 2009 Joint Commission Infection Prevention and Control (IC) and Emergency Management Guidelines require more complete surge capacity plans including the handling of an influx of infectious disease patients over an extended period of time. The presenters in this session will review facility, local and state planning strategies for surge capacity, case studies requiring unexpected extended containment, and pandemic planning.;Objectives: • Describe new Joint Commission requirements and Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) tools • List at least one element in a gap analysis on daily and pandemic surge capacity planning • Describe a comprehensive practical plan for handling an influx of infectious disease patients
