Description
The presenter will review the four guiding principles that should be considered when attempting to develop a dialogue with the surgical practitioner and OR support personnel; Knowledge of the scope of surgical practice — "one size does not fit all." (b) Understand the historic role of dogma (ie. antibiotic lavage) within the surgical services. (c) Foster an environment of mutual respect and (d) Embrace an environment of transparency and understanding in which change becomes and inevitable outcome without fear of retribution.;Objectives: a. Discuss why fostering an environment of mutual respect leads to improved patient care practices. b. Identify specific scopes of practice within the surgical science and how selected evidence-based practices can improve patient outcomes, while others may not. c. Discuss why surgical dogma may often inhibit implementation of effective evidence-based practices and what can the ICP do about it. d. Review specific examples of where the surgical practitioner can become a champion of change and what role the ICP can play in that process.
