Description
This session will have an in-depth review of all transfusion medicine service issues related to ABO mismatch transplantation (HSCT and solid organs). The speakers will describe the relevant testing, such as titers for ABO mismatch transplants and their utilization. The session will discuss transfusion strategies as well as protocol developed for those transplants. The session will cover cellular processing issues in ABO mismatch HSCT transplantation and the apheresis support in preparation for the ABO mismatch transplants as well as for treatment of rejection.

LEARNER OUTCOMES:
  • Describe relevant testing done at the blood bank supporting those transplants including methodology, limitations and utilization.
  • Identify the role of transfusion service (including the blood bank, cell therapy lab, apheresis) in preparation for ABO mismatch transplantation.
  • List the unique blood products needs for ABO mismatch transplants and review an algorithm developed in a transfusion service in order to be prepare for those unusual events.
  • Review the current status of apheresis in ABO mismatch transplantation.
