Description
The system capacity initiative (SCI) is a multi-year program conducted by the NMDP in partnership with several stakeholders (e.g. professional societies, payers, government agencies and transplant centers) to understand and address the capacity and infrastructure needs and challenges to HCT. This session will describe the results of the deliberations of this program and some of the innovative projects to address these challenges. The Radiation Injury Treatment Network (RITN) is a cooperative effort of the NMDP and the American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation to prepare for the comprehensive evaluation and treatment of victims of radiation exposure or other marrow toxic injuries. RITN centers include transplant centers, cord blood banks and blood centers with expertise in HCT. This session will discuss the planning efforts by RITN to prepare for such an event, including the development of treatment guidelines, education of healthcare professionals, and efforts to coordinate a response to a disaster including supporting centers with patients in need of HCT.

  • Describe the NMDP system capacity initiative to address anticipated challenges and needs for HCT.
  • Describe the present status and future needs for capacity and infrastructure for hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT).
  • Understand the role of the Radiation Treatment Network emergency preparedness system for supporting casualties from a domestic radiation or toxic marrow incident.
