Perioperative point-of-care testing for blood management in cardiac surgery,,
Shiu-Ki Hui, MD
Point of care testing as a guide to management of hemorrhagic and thrombotic complications associated with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support of children
Tuan Le, MD, Medical Director-Clinical Services, Bonfils Blood Center
Experiences with point-of-care testing as a guide to management of life-threatening post-injury coagulopathy
Description
Blood management for patients undergoing cardiac surgery, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support (ECMO) or resuscitation after trauma is complex. Algorithms integrating near-patient coagulation monitoring as a guide for blood transfusion have the potential to both improve patient outcomes and reduce blood transfusion. During this session, speakers will address methodologies and interpretation of near-patient testing, important parameters to consider in developing a management algorithm and the results of published studies and their own experiences. The speakers in this session have both practical and research experience in the sphere of transfusion support that they will address. An interactive panel discussion will occur after the three presentations.

  • Cite various clinical trials that have utilized laboratory and point-of-care hemostasis testing as a guide to perioperative blood management in the cardiac surgery setting, and be able to identify the key points that need to be considered when developing a perioperative protocol.
  • Discuss the nature of trauma-associated coagulopathy and the advantages and disadvantages of the various near-patient coagulation assessment tools.
  • Review the complications of ECMO therapy and suggest coagulation assessment tools that could guide transfusion practice.
