Description
As existing transfusion safety and patient blood management programs continue to demonstrate a positive impact on PBM practice, hospital and laboratory administrators, managers and physicians continue to request information on how to develop programs for their institutions. The position of a transfusion safety officer (TSO) or PBM coordinator at many institutions is filled from within. Professionals new to this role seek opportunities for professional development using networking and other programs as resources. This interactive session will share strategies used by institutions with functioning programs on successful program justifications, business plans, selection and development of program coordinators and utilization of data to improve transfusion medicine practice. Topics include practical advice for program justification and creation, identification of problems within transfusion practice that can be solved by a TS/PBM program, comparison of various program models, projects and clinical background of program managers and creative use of data to provide objective evidence meeting program goals.

LEARNER OUTCOMES:
  • Demonstrate the impact of TS/PBM programs through evidence collected using available data management tools.
  • Describe problems within transfusion practice outside the blood bank and how a TS/PBM program can create solutions.
  • Identify strategies used by organizations to successfully justify creation of transfusion safety (TS) and patient blood management (PBM) programs.
  • Utilize a business case template to present various program models and clinical backgrounds of TS/PBM managers.
