Description
The hot topic session addresses a transfusion practice issue that has been debated for many years: should we be giving prophylactic platelet transfusion therapy to hematology/oncology patients who have chemotherapy induced thrombocytopenia or is a therapeutic only strategy safe? 2012 was a landmark year for transfusion medicine with the results of two randomized controlled trials addressing this issue being reported: a study from Germany; and the international TOPPS trial lead by researchers in the UK. This session will explore the designed and results of these two trials, their similarities and differences and discussions/debates around changing practice and the need for future research.

Simon Stanworth did not give consent to be recorded.

  • Assess the design and results of two recently published randomized controlled trials evaluating a therapeutic platelet transfusion strategy and the implication of these studies for transfusion practice.
  • Identify the differences and similarities of the two studies.
  • Review challenges associated with knowledge translation and explore the need for future research.
