Stem Cell Mobilization and Peripheral Blood Stem Collection in Pediatric Patients

Description
Established and recently approved pharmacologic agents can effectively mobilize peripheral blood stem cells in the majority of patients for collection and subsequent use in stem cell transplantation, regenerative medicine and other cell-based therapies. Uncertainty exists, however, regarding the ideal management of patients who are difficult to mobilize, the potential role of alternative drugs, such as pegylated filgrastim, and best practices for children. Similarly, although plerixafor was approved in late 2008, questions remain as to the most rational and cost effective use of this drug in combination with filgrastim and in the setting of chemo-mobilization. This session will address the state-of-the art approaches for safe, effective and efficient stem cell mobilization and procurement in both adult and pediatric patient populations with a major focus on the methodologies and comparative analyses that have been used to define policies for optimal mobilization and collection practices.

LEARNER OUTCOMES:
  • Describe and discuss the theory and practice of autologous peripheral blood stem cell mobilization in adults using various agents, including filgrastim, pegfilgrastim and plerixafor.
  • Develop policies for optimal resource utilization in mobilization and collection practices.
  • Discuss and appraise the methodologies and applications of pharmacoeconomics and cost-based analyses.
  • Review the experiences and best practices of peripheral blood stem cell mobilization and collection in pediatric patients.
