Nursing's role in preventing, recognizing and managing the pulmonary complications of transfusion
Description
Nurses administer most of the 20.9 million blood products that are transfused each year in the United States. In addition, they play a vital role in monitoring patients throughout the administration of blood products. While healthcare resources and the public have focused on the safety of the blood product itself, the actual process of transfusion, including post-transfusion oversight, has received very little attention. Nationwide audits have identified significant gaps in the identification and management of transfusion-related adverse events. This pinpoints a compelling need for providing our clinicians with current information on how to identify two of the leading causes of transfusion-related morbidity and mortality, TRALI and TACO. The program presenters will recommend the best practices for the prevention and management of each pulmonary complication to clinicians. Collaborative management among the entire healthcare team is vital when a pulmonary complication occurs. This session will provide an understanding of the appropriate escalation pathway and reporting process to follow when a pulmonary complication occurs to ensure the best possible patient outcome.

  • Define the etiology and review the signs and symptoms of transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI) and transfusion-associated circulatory overload (TACO).
  • Describe prevention and treatment strategies for TRALI and TACO.
  • Discuss nursing's role in the management of TRALI and TACO.
