The ABHH
Description
This session will address the innovative international collaboration between the AABB and the Brazilian Association of Hematology, Hemotherapy and Cellular Therapy (ABHH) for the implementation of a joint accreditation program in Brazilian blood centers, transfusion services and cellular therapies. In the last two decades, the Brazilian government and private sector have made substantial investments in transfusion medicine raising the quality to a level that permits adoption of the AABB Standards for Blood Banks, Transfusion Services and Cellular Therapies recently translated into Brazilian Portuguese, adapted to Brazilian regulatory requirements and reviewed by the blood banking community. Applicants will be subjected to a biannual inspection by AABB/ABHH certified assessors and a joint accreditation committee will review the outcomes. This session will also assess the impact of the U.S. National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) REDS programs in the overall picture of transfusion medicine in Brazil.

LEARNER OUTCOMES:
  • Assess the impact of the International REDS Research programs of the NHLBI in Brazil.
  • Describe the structure of the program and the inspections by joint AABB/ABHH certified assessors.
  • Explain how the AABB Standards were adapted to conform with Brazilian regulatory requirements.
  • Introduce and provide an overall assessment of transfusion medicine and cellular therapies in Brazils joint AABB/ABHH accreditation program.
